EMDRIA-Approved EMDR Training · Online & on California's Central Coast
Helping therapists become confident EMDR practitioners.
Live online and in person on California's Central Coast — a supportive, structured learning space built for clinicians at every stage of practice.
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), developed by Francine Shapiro, is a well-researched therapy that helps clients process experiences that continue to shape their beliefs, relationships, and emotional responses.
By working at the core source of distress rather than only managing symptoms, EMDR can support meaningful and lasting change.

The Setting
California's Central Coast
Training takes place in Solvang, nestled in the Santa Ynez Valley — one of the most beautiful stretches of California's Central Coast. Rolling hills, open skies, and a pace of life that invites presence. It turns out that learning something as relational and embodied as EMDR feels different when you're not in a conference hotel off the freeway.
The Cohort
Small, intentional, real
Elements trainings are deliberately kept small. A small cohort means you'll actually know the people you practise with — and that matters. EMDR is an intimate therapy to learn. You'll bring your real clinical questions, work on real material, and leave with colleagues who've seen you do that. That kind of cohort cohesion doesn't happen in a room of sixty people.
Going Further
Our training takes it a step further
Not only will we provide a training that helps you learn and understand EMDR at its core, but we will also explore attachment-rooted applications of EMDR, guiding your understanding of how early relational experiences shape present patterns and how reprocessing can support deeper, more secure ways of relating.
Understanding the EMDR Adaptive Information Processing Model
Learn the 8-phase model of EMDR therapy and how each phase supports structured trauma processing and effective reprocessing of distressing memories.
Assessment and Reprocessing Skills
Develop skills to identify trauma-related symptoms and assess client readiness, including screening for stability and dissociation, and how to facilitate reprocessing using bilateral stimulation (BLS) while tracking client responses in session.
Clinical Practice and Integration
Learn how to integrate EMDR into your clinical practice, including case conceptualization, treatment planning using the three-pronged approach (past, present, future), and applying the method with clarity and fidelity to the EMDR model.
Meet Your Trainer
Christina Viani, LMFT
Christina holds a degree in Philosophy and Psychology from Durham University (UK) and a Master's in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University. She has practised in Santa Barbara since 2015, completed her EMDR training in 2019, and is an EMDRIA Approved Trainer, Certified EMDR Therapist, and Approved Consultant.
Her clinical specialties — complex trauma, dissociation, attachment, and perinatal mental health — are woven directly into the training. That means you won't just learn the EMDR protocol; you'll learn how to apply it with nuance across a range of clinical presentations, including the more complex ones that standard trainings rarely address.
Christina brings a warm, grounded teaching style and a commitment to making EMDR genuinely accessible — not just as a technique, but as a way of understanding your clients more deeply.
Get in TouchWhat clinicians say
Christina has been an invaluable consultation resource for some of my most complex cases. Her clinical depth across trauma, dissociative disorders, and substance use is easily apparent. She doesn't simply know the protocols — she understands the underlying theory well enough to help you adapt when a case doesn't fit the textbook.
What sets Christina apart is how practical her feedback is: I consistently left consultations with a clear next step, not just a conceptual reframe.
Christina holds complexity with ease and brings a warmth to the consultation relationship that makes it genuinely safe to bring your hardest cases. I recommend her without reservation. If you're doing serious trauma work, she's the consultant and teacher you want in your corner.

Before You Enroll
Training Requirements
Please read the following requirements carefully before submitting your registration.
Each participant must attend all training sessions, sign in and out to verify attendance, actively participate in practicum exercises, complete course evaluations, and pass a post-test. For live webinar trainings, participants are required to keep their video on throughout the course.
Those arriving more than 15 minutes after the start time or leaving more than 15 minutes before the training is completed will not receive CE credits. Attendance at all four modules is required to complete the training.
Participants are expected to study the following texts prior to and during the training. A pre-training reading list will be provided upon acceptance into the program.
- Shapiro, F. (2018). Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing: Basic Principles, Protocols and Procedures (3rd ed.). New York: Guilford Press.
- Leeds, A. M. (2016). A Guide to the Standard EMDR Therapy Protocols for Clinicians, Supervisors, and Consultants (2nd ed.). New York: Springer Publishing Company.
This training includes extensive experiential practice, and participants must be prepared to work on personal material in practice sessions. This is a training exercise — not personal psychotherapy — but it does require a degree of emotional availability and stability.
Participants who are not willing or able to engage in experiential work on stressful life experiences should not apply. If you are currently experiencing significant personal distress, please contact Christina to discuss whether this is the right time to begin training.
Consultation sessions in Modules 2–4 require participants to present their actual clinical use of EMDR with real clients. You should have at least two clients with whom you can begin practicing EMDR over the course of the training.
Clinicians without access to a clinical caseload during the training period will not be able to fully meet consultation requirements. Please consider this carefully before registering.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. EMDRIA does not formally recognise a "Part 1" or "Part 2" — these reflect different training models offered by different providers. The Elements training is a complete, EMDRIA-approved basic training delivered across four two-day weekends. Upon completion you will have met all EMDRIA requirements for basic training.
EMDRIA requires full attendance at all training sessions. The training is a sequential learning process — each module builds on the last — and it is not possible to miss a full day and make it up via home study. Please only register if you can commit to attending all four modules. If you have concerns, please contact Christina before registering.
Yes. All required consultation hours are integrated into the training schedule across Modules 2, 3, and 4. There is no need to arrange or pay for additional consultation separately in order to meet basic training requirements.
No — your supervisor does not need to be EMDR trained, but they must be supportive of you using EMDR with appropriate clients over the course of the training. You will need a letter from your supervisor confirming this. Please contact Christina for the full pre-licensed application requirements.
Completing basic training means you are "trained in EMDR" and eligible for EMDRIA membership — but EMDRIA Certification is a separate, additional credential that requires post-training hours, consultation, and an application process. Christina offers EMDRIA-approved consultation for clinicians working toward Certification after completing basic training.
Yes — and this training is particularly well suited to you. Christina's clinical background is in complex trauma, dissociation, and attachment, and these areas are woven throughout the curriculum. You'll learn not just the standard EMDR protocol, but how to work safely and thoughtfully with clients who don't fit the textbook case.
There is a dedicated segment in Module 3 introducing modifications of EMDR for children and adolescents. However, EMDRIA's training standards treat work with children as a specialty area, best developed through advanced workshops after completing basic training. This training provides a strong foundation and you will have the opportunity to discuss your child and adolescent cases during consultation sessions.
If children are your primary population, it is worth supplementing this training with specialist reading and advanced workshops focused on younger clients.
Yes. This training provides continuing education credits for licensed mental health professionals, including LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. Full CE details — including the number of hours and provider information — will be confirmed and shared with all registered participants prior to the start of training. Please contact Christina directly if you have specific CE requirements you'd like to discuss before registering.
Absolutely — and you are in good hands. Christina has over ten years of clinical experience in community mental health settings, working with justice-involved individuals, veterans, and clients with complex co-occurring presentations including trauma, substance use, and serious mental illness. These populations are not an afterthought in this training; they are central to how Christina teaches.
The curriculum is built around the reality that most clinicians are not seeing straightforward single-incident PTSD. From the very first module, you will learn how to assess readiness, build stability, and work safely with clients whose presentations are layered and complex. If your caseload is high-acuity, this training was designed with you in mind.
